Split testing combines two similar ads with very small difference, which could range from the color scheme to the font or to the photos inside the ad. The two ads run side by side and the marketing company tests to find out which one generates more impressions.

The technique in theory, ensures that the marketer will not just assume it’s a good campaign but instead know it’s a great campaign.

Split testing is the only precise way to gauge which ad campaign will work the best. You cannot merely read someone else’s advice on how he made a killing online and assume the same approach will work with your product or service.

Different products have different audiences, and what was successful to one may not be successful to another. Your product may have been a step-by-step guide to an online video game, and the product marketed by the expert was a relationship guide for Christian grandparents. These two topics are obviously completely different. Do you think they generate the same exact audience?

Young adults and teenagers have shorter attention spans, so they like flashy ads filled with relevant pop culture and vibrant colors. The elderly on the other hand, want a simple and plain ad with a large sized font.

In layman?s terms, split testing is basically taking two different ads with very minor differences and proving which one works more effectively. The minor differences can range from color or size text, to a certain phrase.

The ad campaign will run for a few days. At the end of the campaign, the marketer studies the two ads and breaks down which one was more effective. The marketer selects the more effective ad and then makes another minor change to the ad. Another split test is conducted. This process continues several different times until an ideal ad is discovered.

Split testing is also used for newsletters, sales copy, and many other forms of writing that promote sales. A lot of marketers use software to help rotate their sales pages, and examine which technique works the most effectively.
