Things You Should Keep In Mind When Blogging

February 7th, 2010 Nik Imran No comments

Do you have a checklist of things to do when you log into your admin section of your blog? Sometimes, we tend to forget things. Due to having busy life schedule, this is very normal for everyone. When it comes to blogging however, there are many things that we should try to keep in mind. I must admit that I tend to forget some of this myself, so hopefully this post will also serve as a checklist to go through once in a while.

1. Backup your blog regularly – I don’t think I can stress this enough. If there is one thing you should take from the tips listed here, it’s this one. And I speak from experience. Waking up early in the morning only to find your blog crashed and you have no backup data, is like having your soul mate killed right in front of you, and there is nothing you could do about it.

2. Link to older posts – Linking to older posts can increase your traffic and search engine rankings. Additionally, it can also give more information for the readers that want to go deeper into certain subjects. If you have been blogging for months already you probably have a vast and rich archive, so use it.

3. Network – Ask 10 successful blogger and at least 7 of them will answer you this; “The key to blogging success is networking with other bloggers”. Sometimes, who you know is more important that what you know. There are many ways to network. Things like commenting on other blogs, guest posting and befriends them in social media.

4. Proofread – If you browse around the blogosphere you will notice that the vast majority of the bloggers do not proofread. Confusions with its and it’s, your and you’re, and their and they’re are very common. So the next time you finish writing a post or article, remember to proofread it.

5. Answer to comments – When you started blogging I am pretty sure that you got excited with the first few comments that arrived. You would even take the time to answer to each of them individually. That approach helps to create loyal readers and to build a community around them. Even if your blog is much more popular now, do not neglect the comments. At the very minimum you want to answer the people that post direct questions to you.

6. Answer your e-mails – E-mails can get overwhelming at times. I’m not going to lie to you and say I reply to all of them. That would be wasting too much of my time. However, I always make sure to reply to any genuine inquiries and questions that relate to my blogs topic. It might be the difference between an upset visitor and a faithful reader.

7. Upgrade WordPress – Common sense, yet many bloggers are reluctant to upgrade their WordPress software. Some people deliberately choose to use older versions. That could be possible if you know what you are doing (i.e. if you know to patch the security holes).

Small Business Search Engine Optimization

February 5th, 2010 Laura Parker No comments

New small business have a lot on their plate when they initially launch a website and then attempt to learn all of the ins and outs about online marketing – including the illusive search engine optimization. All of this buzz in the industry cannot be wrong though and startup websites have an obligation to themselves to understand some of the finer points about SEO and the potential benefits

An essential first point to understand is the fact that small business hoping to make money through their sites can benefit from search engine optimization. It’s that simple. SEO is not one of the steps to online marketing that small business should leave out. Optimizing small businesses is incredibly valid because of the search engine traffic and potential clients that sites like Google and Bing bring to a site.

The key to successful SEO is finding a niche and optimizing your business or blog for keywords within a very specific market. Search engine optimization should not bring in untargeted traffic to your site – if you’re optimizing for random keywords then you are likely spamming the system a bitand that’s just not good.

Using ethical SEO tactics and through targeted keywords the result is a website and small business that places well in the organic search engines for a very specific keyword phrase. The best type of advertising is free, and targeted keywords and search engine optimization means that sites will place higher in the search results for their targeted keywords.

There is incredible, incredibly value to search optimizing a small business because of the sheer amount of targeted and niche search traffic that you can bring into your site. SEO differs from spam because the sites are focused on a niche set of keywords for which their site is relevant. That’s the core principle to SEO – organic search engine traffic that is specifically looking for your small business’ unique products and services.

The central point to all of this is that SEO has a lot of value for all small (and large) business operating on the Web today. There are both ethical and unethical ways to use search engine optimization, but the unethical tactics equate to spam. Ethical SEO efforts though are essentially one of the most important parts of launching a new online business. The main goal of SEO is to enhance the web presence of an company and better place that site in the search engines for a specific and niche keyword that is highly relevant to the optimized site.

XML Offers Neutral And Platform Independent Encapsulation Of Your Data

February 4th, 2010 Peter H. Spencer No comments

Extensible Mark-up Language (XML) has quickly established itself as a viable technology with a huge range of real-world applications. One of the key reasons for its importance and wide acceptance is that it offers a working solution to one of the key problems faced by software developers and computer users alike: the exchange of incompatible data. Each software environment produces its own unique type of binary file which only it can understand. Once data is exported in XML format, it becomes a known quantity, independent of the environment in which it was originated.

The PDF format is another example of a platform-independent format which has gained worldwide acceptance. Once a document is saved in PDF format, its format is set in stone, it can viewed and printed with its layout and formatting intact, without the need for the software which created the original document. However, where the PDF format concerns itself mainly with the presentation of information, XML is used to describe and encapsulate the information itself.

Though XML itself is still fairly new, the idea behind is over thirty years old. In the 1970s, Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) was developed in an attempt to create an application-independent method of describing and storing data. SGML is a text-based language which relies on the concept of adding mark-up to data which describes the data itself. An SGML document contains both the original data and a lexicon of rules defining the structure of that data. SGML is a fairly complex language and, unlike XML, has never gained wide popularity. In the early 1990s, SGML was used to develop and specify the rules of HyperText Markup Language (HTML) and in the late 1990s, SGML was again called upon, this time as the basis for the creation of XML. In a lot of ways XML is basically a restricted form of SGML.

XML has already proved itself an excellent medium for storing, describing and transporting data, particularly over the web. It offers flexibility, clarity and simplicity. An XML document looks similar to an HTML document and consists of the same human-readable tags. However, the tags used to markup an HTML document are pre-defined: only a limited set of tags can legitimately be used. XML allows you to create a markup language and define the tags which are legitimate for your data. It does this using a schema document, which can itself be an XML document. The schema document specifies the vocabulary and grammar which may be used within the XML document which contains your data.

The fact that, when creating and generating XML documents, you can invent all the rules, means that you never have to force your data into a container which was not designed to hold it. You design tags which reflect the nature of your data; you create a schema document which defines the hierarchical structure of your information; and you specify the type of information each element within your document is permitted to contain. In short, if you end up with an XML documents which is unsuitable for holding your information, you have only yourself to blame!

Review – Is Jonathan Mizel’s New Traffic Evolution A Ripoff, Or Is It Worth Your Money? ) Traffic Evolution Review

January 29th, 2010 John Detlefs No comments

Now that Google hates affiliate marketing (well, they say that they only hate spammy affiliate marketers) it’s becoming a necessity to find new sources of traffic. For many marketers Google had become the only egg that they had in their basket, and the dangers of that strategy have quickly come made themselves known! Of course, with so many ad networks springing up, which ones are good value for money, and which ones convert best into sales?

Enter Traffic Evolution from Jonathan Mizel.

What Does Traffic Evolution Do?

Traffic Evolution is all about alternative sources of paid traffic from the usual Google Adwords, Yahoo and Overture (MSN). This is not a course on internet marketing, or how to get more traffic from the natural search engines.

In this course Jonathan Mizel will show you all of the ad networks that he is using currently, and he will walk you through all of the steps on how to set yourselves up with them, and how to start generating some traffic. He’ll also let you know about any quirks that they may have, so that you don’t get stuck on too many stupid incongruences on the user interface.

Alternatives to Google Adwords and Yahoo often have a lot less competition and so can be a lot cheaper to buy traffic from. Sometimes the savings can be a few cents per click, and sometimes you’ll pay up to half what you’d expect to pay. Often just a few cents per click can make the difference between a profitable campaign and a campaign that loses you money, and so getting cheaper traffic is always a good thing!

So Where Does Traffic Evolution Get It Right?

There are two main parts to Traffic Evolution. The first is a series of twelve videos that run you through all of the ad networks that Jonathan Mizel is using, how to sign up, and how to make the most of the traffic that you get. The second thing that you get is access to the members only forum. Generally with a forum of this type (an addition to the main product) the guru in question just lets their members run it, with little interaction from themselves.

But thankfully that hasn’t happened here. Joanthan Mizel seems to keep pretty close tabs on what’s going on in his forum, and he almost always answers a thread that involves him, or asks for a question. He also always answers my emails personally, which in this world that seems to focus on outsourcing as the holy grail, is nice to see, and gives me confidence in his training.

At the moment there is a massive trend towards monthly continuity programs, which can get pretty expensive very quickly, so it was nice to see that Jonathon Mizel has opted to stick with a one off payment of $197 for Traffic Evolution.

I’m at the point where i’m about to boycott monthly continuity programs because they cost so much, an generally most of the products that now charge monthly could have been bought with a one of payment a year ago, so to see a product with just a one off payment was great!

The Ugly Side Of Traffic Evolution?

This is a pretty specialised product, so it’s only about alternative sources of paid traffic. It doesn’t show you what to do with the traffic once you’ve got it, or how to make sure that the traffic that you do get is really targeted towards your ideal customers. That’s not really a bad, it’s just something that you should know. It doesn’t go into keyword research or demographics at all.

And that’s about it for the bad!

So Who is Traffic Evolution For?

**IF YOU ARE NOT AN EXPERIENCED MARKETER DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!**

You really need to have a product that is currently making you some money, or at least be running campaigns on adwords that are making you some money.

Check out Google Cash, or maybe Perry Marshall’s Perry Marshall’s Definitive Guide To Adwords. Go to the video review link at the bottom of this article to find out where to get those or for reviews on those!

If you’re an experienced marketer however, who currently runs campaigns with Adwords or Overture, and especially if you’re one of the poor buggers that got banned for life by Google recently, then Traffic Evolution is just what the doctor ordered, and WILL get you traffic at lower prices than you would get from Google.

Is Traffic Evolution A Good Buy?

Well, it depends. If the forum wasn’t there, then i think that Traffic Evolution would be a fair-to-slightly-overpriced offering at $199. The information isn’t readily available elsewhere, and so for the moment this sort of money can be charged due to scarcity. However with the forum, that actually gets some interaction from Jonathan Mizel, I think that the $199 price tag is fine. I certainly haven’t regretted my buy!

How Does Traffic Evolution Look Overall?

In my opinion, you really need to be an experienced marketer to use Traffic Evolution. And if you fit this category, then it’s an excellent buy, and you should get it asap. If you’re not an experienced marketer then you should give this one a miss, or at the very least understand that Traffic Evolution won’t be a stand alone course for you, and you’ll have to use it in conjunction with other courses.

Traffic Evolution Ratings:

1. Usability: 4 from 5. Information is good and the videos are easy to watch. Great Forum. 2. Usefulness: 4 from 5. If you’re looking for new, tested sources of traffic, then this is a winner! 3. Value for money: 4 from 5. $199 is not cheap for any info product, but as the information is scarce at the moment, I think it’s pretty good value for money, especially when the forum is factored in. 4. Overall: 4 from 5. Traffic Evolution is an excellent Course, especially if you’re an experienced marketer.

How To Make Your Blog Attractive To Ad Buyers

January 28th, 2010 Nik Imran No comments

If you own a well established blog within a particular niche, you have a potential money maker. One way to improve your blog income is to focus on attracting both big advertisers and traditional media. Here are some tips on how to do so:

1. Show them the banners – If you currently have no paid placements on your site, put up house ads or partner ads in the same spot you would run a paid spot. (A house ad refers to banners for other products or sites that you or your company own).

2. Don’t use Google AdSense on your site – OK, this could be the most painful one for most people especially if you are generating a few hundred bucks a month from it already. But Google ad sense devalues your site and makes it look unprofessional. You have to ask yourself, “Do I want some real revenue from my site or Google’s table scraps.”

3. Focus on a specific topic and try to become an authority figure – Try to spread your opinions and research by contributing articles to blogs, newsletters, online magazines, and other things. Try to get interviews by other bloggers. You want to prop yourself up on a pedestal so that you look worthy of having advertisers on your blog.

4. Keep your blog professional – Try not to talk about yourself too much. You do not want to scare your advertisers away. They’re looking for a blog that is for a specific topic or industry. That means they want you to talk about it otherwise it will not feel like they’re advertising on a blog that really has a topic or goes within an industry.

5. Think of your blog as a business – Monitor your traffic and webpages with conversion ratios in mind. Set up auxiliary streams of income (Job board, online stores) to improve your site’s perceived income value.

6. Hire writers/guest bloggers – Once your blog has grown huge, I recommend you to hire writer/guest bloggers so you can focus on strategic planning for your blog. Multiple writers will also help establish your blog as an online publication or community blog. Think Mashable.

As advertising can generate a substantial amount of regular income, make sure to make the most out of your blog by following these tips. Happy blogging.

6 Blog Design Tips And Mistakes To Avoid

January 26th, 2010 Nik Imran No comments

For a blog design, no matter how unique your design is, it’s always not recommended that you forget the basic. Lately, I have come across a few blogs that have great logos and headers only to have bad basic design. Use these six tips and mistakes to make the most out of your blog.

1. The user must know what the site is about in seconds – Attention is one the most valuable currencies on the Internet. If a visitor can not figure what your site is about in a couple of seconds, he will probably just go somewhere else. Your site must communicate why I should spend my time there, and FAST!

2. Avoid complex URL structures – A simple, keyword-based URL structure will not only improve your search engine rankings, but it will also make it easier for the reader to identify the content of your pages before visiting them.

3. Make sure your website is cross-browser compatible – Not all browsers are created equal, and not all of them interpret CSS and other languages on the same way. Like it or not, you will need to make your website compatible with the most used browsers on the market, else you will lose readers over the long term.

4. Use complimentary colors – Be judicious in choosing your color scheme; too many colors, or colors that are too bright, can turn off readers and cause them to click away sooner than they might otherwise.

5. Do a usability check – Borrow a trick from the pros and do a usability check by enlisting several friends or colleagues to poke around your blog. This is most effective if you’re sitting beside them, listening to their feedback with a notebook in hand. You might be surprised what valuable information you receive when you ask for it.

6. Make sure to include anchor text on links – I confess I used to do that mistake until some time ago. It is easier to tell people to “click here”. But this is not efficient. Make sure to include a relevant anchor text on your links. It will ensure that the reader knows where he is going to if he clicks the link, and it will also create SEO benefits for the external site where the link is pointing.

Although I won’t deny that most blogs can get away with bad design as long as they provide good content, it’s always a good thing to provide good user experience to your user.
